Israeli dance FAQ
I'd like to come to Israeli dance, but I'm not a member of Kol Shalom...I'm not even Jewish! Will I be welcome?
Absolutely! We call Israeli dance “rikudei am,” dance for the people! Everyone is welcome.
I don't know any of the dances. Will I be left out?
Absolutely not! The leaders teach the dance steps and help you practice. Most everyone in attendance is still learning the dances, so you won't be alone. The basic steps are easy and you’ll be dancing in no time. And remember, if you’re smiling and having fun, you’re doing it right!
What is the music like?
Israeli folk dance music is like a trip around the world! We dance to music from the Middle East, Poland, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Africa...Israeli dance music encompasses all the musical styles Jews brought with them as they moved to Israel from all over. Some of our songs and dances are old, and some are popular Israeli tunes right now.
Do I need a partner?
Nope. Most of our dances are circle or line dances, and we’ll be happy to match you up with some new friends when we do pair and trio dances.
My child is a little young for dancing. Can we come and just clap along and watch?
Please do...but don’t be surprised if your todders get up and try a few steps!
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable, non-marking shoes, and comfortable clothes (layers are recommended, as you'll get quite warm!). Otherwise, there is no special dress code.
I'd like to bring a youth group or school class. Do you offer group rates?
Yes we do! Please email us for group rate information.
What am I supporting by attending this event?
Congregation Kol Shalom serves Jewish individuals and families, as well as people interested in learning more about Judaism, from Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap County. In addition to synagogue operations, we provide children with scholarships and camperships, offer adult education opportunities and social activities, and support tikkun olam (repair of the world) with social action activities in our community.
