Each month, different faith communities on the island provide meals for the last five working days of the month to individuals and families who might be having trouble making ends meet until the next payday. Sadly, the number of people needing to rely on this service is growing rapidly. In recent months, over 30 people are coming to have a hot meal each night that super suppers are offered. Meals are served at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (at St. Cecilia's on Wednesdays).
Congregation Kol Shalom provides food and service for the meal on the last Tuesday of each month, in conjunction with Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church. We alternate food responsibilities with Cedars--one month, we provide a main dish, milk, and juice; the next month, we provide bread, salad, and dessert. In the past, there has been a small core of dedicated volunteers from CKS who show up each month and make the meals happen. With larger numbers of people coming for supper, we need more volunteers! Volunteers prepare the food (main dishes must be assembled and cooked at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, or be a packaged meal, such as frozen lasagne; salads, breads, and dessert can be purchased, or prepared at home), serve, and clean up.
With the increased need for these meals, we'd like to try something new. We will try to scope out good deals at local grocery stores on easy foods to prepare or bring the week before and provide suggestions in the weekly email, but don't be bound to those suggestions! In the weekly email, people will be asked to sign up to provide various parts of the meal. This way, we can make sure we can meet the needs of people, and won't have to turn people away hungry.

As always, thanks for your generosity!
